The Stevens Indicator
Presidents' Letters

  Ed Eichhorn

This issue of The Indicator marks the end of another great year at Stevens. As I have said many times in this column, Stevens is a vibrant place. If you have not been back to campus in a long time, I think you will find that it’s worth the trip. The school year began with Stevens winning the prestigious Jostens Institution of the Year award, chosen as the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) school with the best academic performance and the best winning percentage for its sports teams among the 321 ECAC members. Our soccer team made it to the Division III NCAA national championshi¬p finals for the first time. Earlier in the year, we commemorated the 100th anniversary of the Stevens Honor System, and this spring we enjoyed the well-attended 125th anniversary of Stevens Men’s Lacrosse and the 100th anniversary of Khoda. The Khoda and lacrosse events are featured in this issue of The Indicator.

Despite the deep recession in our economy and the news reports about its impact on private education, Stevens’ enrollment remains strong. A record number of applications were received this year, and our Admissions Office anticipates that we will have more than 540 freshmen next year. Stevens also graduated 419 undergraduates and 1,192 advanced degree candidates this spring, with an additional 442 graduate certificates awarded.

We have also improved communications opportunities for our alumni. Largely based on the efforts of our Young Alumni Committee, chaired by our treasurer Vicky Velasco ’04, we now have more than 2,000 alumni on our private network, www.stevensconnect.org. Our e-mail newsletter, “News From Castle Point,” now goes out to more than 10,000 of your e-mail addresses every two months.

My term as president ends this June, and there are so many friends and fellow alumni to thank who have made this a very good year for the Alumni Association. I would like to thank Hal Raveché and the Stevens leadership team for their support and collaboration on behalf of the SAA. I would also like to thank our Executive Committee members, the regional and professional club presidents, our committee chairs and our officers Vicky Velasco ’04, Mark La Rosa ’93 and Mary Doddy ’80 for all that they have done on behalf of the SAA over the past couple of years.

Lastly, absolutely no event would be planned, no alumni record would be updated and no publication would be written or designed without the efforts of our dedicated staff. So a special thanks to Anita Lang, our executive director; Beth Kissinger, our publications editor; and to Loretta, Anne Marie, Maria, Darlene and Kristin for making my term as president a truly pleasant, enjoyable experience.

I also want to congratulate our new president Mary Doddy and this year’s slate of new officers for the Alumni Association on their election this spring. I am sure that Mary and our new leadership team will do a great job leading our alumni association to new heights during the next two years. Please join me in supporting them in their new responsibilities for our alumni association.

It has been a great privilege to serve as your association president and, as always, I wish you all the very best in the future.

Ed Eichhorn ’69
