This issue also features two stories that highlight the high level of creativity and inventiveness that can be found today on the Stevens campus.
This spring, Senior Project Expo featured more than 100 student projects, with a number of them focusing on cutting-edge green technologies. Our students did such excellent work, from the Hy-Board team, who invented an advanced hybrid outboard motor retrofit kit for a boat engine that uses both gas and electric power, to the team behind the DiaPEDic Insole, a portable device that detects precursor symptoms of Diabetic Foot, among many other groups. It was a proud day for the Institute.
Stevens held its second annual Research & Entrepreneurship Day in May, which focused on creativity and innovation among both Stevens faculty and students. Besides the outstanding presentations by Stevens faculty, the day also attracted some top drawer speakers. Leaders from the Department of Homeland Security, the Department of Defense and the investment world came to share their wisdom and to see for themselves the exciting research now happening at Stevens, which is leading important national research efforts in port security and systems engineering. We also tried something new this year at R&E Day — a Student Technology Pitch Olympics. Students had a limited time to “pitch” their new product or service to a panel of experts. The students were all impressive, as the H2prO team, which has developed a portable, self-powered UV water disinfection device, emerged as the winner. Again, it was a memorable day.
This spring also saw two long-standing student organizations celebrate milestone anniversaries. The men’s lacrosse team marked its 125th anniversary in April, as Stevens has the longest continuously running collegiate varsity lacrosse program in the country. And Khoda, the honor society of student leaders, celebrated its 100th anniversary of service to Stevens. Both anniversary events enjoyed strong attendance from both alumni and the greater Stevens community and were memorable tributes to these two highly regarded organizations.
Finally, this issue includes a tribute to Frederick L. Bissinger ’33, the former chairman of the Stevens Board of Trustees and longtime supporter of the Institute, who passed away on March 3, 2009. Fred’s involvement with Stevens — as a student, instructor, trustee and active alumnus — spanned 75 years, a truly remarkable record of devotion to his alma mater. He will be missed.
Sincerely yours,
Harold J. Raveché
President, Stevens Institute of Technology
