That’s the longest string of any collegiate lacrosse varsity anywhere—dating back to Coney Island’s first roller coaster, publication of Huckleberry Finn and the first long distance phone call, made from New York to Boston by landline, not BlackBerry.
And, from the beginning, Stevens’ lacrosse program has been a success. The overall win-loss record since 1884 is more than .500, with 597 wins, 585 losses and 24 ties, in 1,206 games.
Celebration plans include a “tailgate” pre-game dinner party and a special recognition of lacrosse alumni during halftime at the Lacrosse Homecoming game versus Ithaca. The Team Captain’s Shrine in the locker room will also be unveiled, and the first annual Irvin “Buzz” Seymour Award will be presented to an outstanding current player.
For returning stickhandlers who want to savor the memories, commemorative merchandise and a memory book will be available. Proceeds will benefit the Team Captain’s Shrine and other locker room upgrades.
In addition to Men’s Lacrosse Coach Byron Collins, the following alumni are helping plan the festivities: event chairman and captain Paul Steffen ’57, Doc Ardrey ’60, Pat Drennan ’84, Joe DiPompeo ’98, Brian Lalli ’04, Matt Cannon ’05, Mark Bielicky ’07 and Alex Heckman ’09.
“Save the date for you and your significant other, and plan to party,” said Steffen, a party animal in his own time. “You can count on an unforgettable time marking a proud milestone—and reconnecting with your teammates. Body checking will be suspended for the duration.”
To be kept up to date as plans develop, e-mail your contact information to Anthony Brown, assistant director of Athletics at Stevens, at Anthony.Brown@stevens.edu, or call him at (201) 577-8987. Team captains also need help tracking down missing teammates. Let us know if you can lend a hand.
